Advent in Salzburg
Christmas Markets and Shopping during Christmas Season
Salzburg and advent are a real dream-team. 70 years ago the archetype of advent singing was born here and has from then on been multiply copied in the whole German-speaking region. The Salzburg Christmas Market around the cathedral has even risen to world fame. The magic that is exuded by the traditional advent events and the different Christmas markets fascinates Salzburg’s visitors every year anew.
The original: Salzburg Christmas Market
Dozens of huts with home-made delicacies, traditional craftsmanship and various Christmas tree decorations, accompanied by visits from St. Nicholas, the Krampus and the “Christkind”, and all of this in front of the cathedral’s and castle’s scenery: this is the Salzburg Christmas Market. The traditional market opens every year on the weekend around 20 November and is open daily until 26 December. Special tip for families: on the Salzburg Christmas Market, the “Christkind” itself shows up with its angels and mingles with the visitors. A highlight is the “Turmblasen”, the brass concerts that can be listened to on Residence Square every Saturday.
The Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz
Not quite as big but equally charming is the Christmas Market in front of Mirabell Palace. Here you can shop extraordinary and delicious things and experience a diverse programme of events: Almost every evening, regional musicians frame the Christmas Market’s atmosphere. The Christmas Market in front of Mirabell Palace also opens around 20 November. Für Romantiker: Hellbrunner Adventzauber
For Romantics: „Adventzauber“ in Hellbrunn
For more than 10 years, Hellbrunn Castle has been lending its facade to a dreamy Christmas market. Specialties are the hundreds of decorated Christmas trees, the big Christmas calendar in the castle’s windows and the children’s world with a petting zoo and funny interactive programmes.
Advent of a Different Sort: Waldklang in Anif
A refreshingly modern counterpart to the traditional Christmas markets in the old town is the Waldklang in Anif. Just outside the city in the South, the market enchants with fantastic light installations in natural surroundings, handicrafts, culture and culinary. The event programme includes a wide diversity and offers a platform for many young musicians and artists. Children can look forward to exciting activities from fairy tale readings to pony riding. The Waldklang Anif is open always from Friday to Sunday in the weeks before Christmas.
