Haus der Natur
Salzburg's Museum of Natural History
Discover, Experience, Try
At the foot of Mönchsberg close to River Salzach you will find Haus der Natur (“House of Nature”), it is Salzburg's most visited museum. Fascinating facts and exhibits from nature and technology attract both children and grown-ups. From countless aquariums to terrariums and a journey through the human body, Haus der Natur offers enough subjects for some entertaining hours.
Impressive Underwater Worlds
Children and adults love the aquarium, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful aquariums in Central Europe. In more than 40 exhibition pools you can watch well-known, iridescent, curious and dangerous species from local waters and the ocean. Every Monday at 10:30am visitors can experience the reef shark feed in the 10,000 litre pool.
At the reptile zoo watch reptiles and amphibians. Discover regional Austrian snakes as well around 200 other animals from foreign countries, like the world's most famous poisonous snakes, turtles and tortoises, lizards, giant frogs and Mississippi alligators.
The Science Centre
The new Science Centre at Haus der Natur with a great variety of thrilling experiments encourages visitors to get in touch with technology and science in a playful way. Around 80 experiments are spread out over 3 floors. Operate turbines by hand and experience the walk-in violin, where you can not only hear the music but also feel it all over your body.
Further exhibition rooms are dedicated to minerals, geology, European mammals, birdlife, animals of the Ice Age, America's, Africa's, Australia's and Asian's fauna and last but not least to the human and his pets. Alternating special exhibitions complement the museum's attractions.
The terrace cafe with restaurant is a perfect place for a stop and a snack in between discovery journeys through Haus der Natur.
