Art & Culture in Salzburg
Stimulating entertainment on a budget
There’s a lot more than the Salzburg Festival: the town of Salzburg possesses a lively and diverse art and culture scene. Apart from the big museums, concerts and the festival, you can experience free art and cultural offers that are equally exciting, from the many galleries to free music clubs to the art and cultural associations.
Salzburg’s streets display many galleries: More than 50 can be found here and invite you to experience free art in all kinds of forms. You can find an overview what you can see in which gallery in the folder published by Salzburg’s galleries and museums.

Every week, different locations offer the possibility to enjoy free music:

- Tuesday: Jazzit Free Jazz Jamsession (Elisabethstraße 11)
- Tuesday: HipHop, Reggae and Dancehall at SodaClub (Gstättengasse 21)
- Wednesday: Jazzit Homebase with varying DJs and musical styles
- Daily: at SodaClub, you can listen to a different music genre every day
Sommerszene – Avantgarde Festival
Szene Salzburg takes place every year on 12 days between June and July and has especially made a name for itself in the field of performing arts. Different exterior and interior spaces in town function as stages for guest performances from different countries and for Austrian theatre, dance, performance and installation premieres. These events can be attended for free.
At the same time as the Salzburg Festival, every year different productions from the last years as well as from the current Festival are broadcast on the Kapitelplatz. Beneath the evening sky, operas and concerts invite you to experience free high culture on the big screen.
Summer cinema in the Volksgarten
Spend mild summer evenings at the open-air cinemy on the sand beach in the Volksgarten. On five Wednesday evenings you can watch different movies in a relaxed holiday atmosphere.
Sub Salzburg is a self-governed social centre in the Müllner Hauptstraße. Events like free cinema, kitchen for all, workshops or presentations invite you to stay and chat without obligation to order.
Since its renovation in 2010, the Künstlerhaus wants to attract attention not only with its bright orange-red facade, but especially with its intrinsic values. On 500 m2, the Salzburg Kunstverein mostly shows two parallel exhibitions. Afterwards, the terrace with a view of the river Salzach offers a nice place to talk while enjoying coffee and cake.
This cultural association in Salzburg regularly offers concerts, parties, exhibitions, workshops, a rehearsal room, a café-bar without obligation to order as well as a weekly kitchen for all.
