Are you already done with Christmas shopping?

Salzburg can still look proudly on a big variety of owner-run shops. Beside old stores that have been there for many years there are a good number of young and alternative shops popping up in Salzburg’s streets. Shops with character where personal assistance is emphasised and where you can discover many a curiosity and extraordinary gems. We have browsed our minds and listed shops for you where you can go hunting for Christmas presents – apart from the mainstream.

Salzburg’s book stores

One of the best addresses for book lovers in the city centre: the Buchhandlung Höllrigl, which by the way is the oldest in Austria. The two floors hold an excellently organised range, among them also many Salzburg guides, as the store is located alongside one of the prominent tourist paths.

A little bit more quiet, but also very congenial, is the Rupertusbuchhandlung near Makartplatz. The assortment is particularly strong in fiction, children’s books, languages and sciences. You will certainly value the personal recommendations of the well-read staff.

Another insiders’ tip is the Buchhandlung Stierle whose owner with over 70 years is still passionately in the business. Moreover, the Buchhandlung Stierle is also home to book cat Kira who loves to lie decoratively in the shop window or next to Murakami.

You still like to buy CDs? Then you should browse through the Musikladen in Linzer Gasse. Between CDs and vinyl records, recent and legendary stuff the congenial owners, who play in bands themselves, are happy to give you advice.

Knitting, crocheting – textile handiworks are in. In the Wollzimmer near Kajetanerplatz you stock up on materials, get inspiration from magazines or sign up for knitting workshops. There will certainly be some handmade caps or scarves under this year’s Christmas trees…
